Firearm safety is not a single rule but a set of habits, repeated consistently, until they become automatic. The principles below are standard across professional and military training worldwide, and apply equally whether you own a handgun for sport shooting or a shotgun for hunting.
1. Treat every firearm as if it is loaded
Never assume a firearm is empty, even if you checked it minutes ago or watched someone else clear it. Every time you pick one up, verify its condition yourself.
2. Keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction
“Safe direction” means a direction where, if the firearm discharged unexpectedly, no person or property would be harmed. This is the single habit that prevents the most serious accidents.
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire
Rest your trigger finger along the frame or trigger guard, not on the trigger itself, until your sights are on target and you have made the decision to shoot.
4. Know your target and what is beyond it
Bullets travel well past their intended target. Be certain of what you are aiming at, and what lies behind it, before you fire.
5. Store firearms securely and separately from ammunition
Use a proper safe or locked cabinet, out of reach of children and unauthorised persons. Ammunition should generally be stored separately from the firearm itself.
Training matters more than equipment
No article can replace hands-on instruction. If you are a new owner, seek certified training before your first live-fire session, and continue to practise safe handling every time you use a firearm.
